VISUAL RESONANCE

Cycle Music and Arts Festival, Kopavogur, Iceland

 

VISUAL RESONANCE is an encounter between fine art of today and contemporary music. Compositions, musicians and instruments will form part of a visual staging: the music will be ‘spatially installed’, surrounded by art objects and art activities and reflected or commented upon by these.

The CYCLE Music and Art Festival in Reykjavík and Kópavogur, Iceland wishes to present two varying programs in October 2017. Six current compositions by Ann Cleare, Johan Svensson and Rama Gottfried will form the point of departure of this collaboration between ensemble mosaik and the German-Icelandic curator team Dorothée Kirch and Markús Þór Andrésson. With a selection of art works and art events curators and artists will take a stance on the compositions performed, confronting them with a statement, supplementing them or reflecting one aspect in their own medium. The genres featured range from graphics, sculpture, object art through to video works, installations and performances. The fine artists involved here are Margrét H. Blöndal, Haraldur Jónsson, Darri Lorenzen and Finnbogi Pétursson.

In two work phases (in Berlin and Kópavogur) the musicians and artists will develop and elaborate joint concepts linking the processuality and immediacy of music with the presence and materiality of the works of fine art. The aim here is to develop artistic formats that leverage the potential of the different genres to open up new forms of expression. The basis for this joint research are the performed compositions as well as the selected works of the participating artists. Associations, reflections, thematic questions or goals provide the material of these artistic discourses and implementations.

With the curator duo ensemble mosaik will be developing an overarching concept that will bring the compositions, art works and jointly elaborated projects into a timeframe that will be projected in spatial terms so to speak: the compositions will be performed on different stages and combined with the artists’ works. These works will be integrated into the timeframe and related to the individual compositions. The dimensions of the concert and exhibition will permeate each other.

Supported by the EvS Music Foundation the project brings together artists from different disciplines and in this way aims to open up new paths in the perception of music and fine art, thereby providing access to contemporary music for a new audience.
