Gustav Mahler ‘My Life is not a Neat Chest of Drawers’. New Unknown Letters (ed. by Franz Willnauer)

Paul Zsolnay Verlag, Vienna, Austria

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the publication of the volume “Gustav Mahler, ‘Mein Leben ist keine schön geordnete Kommode’. Neue Unbekannte Briefe” in the series of published Mahler letters edited by Franz Willnauer to appear in March 2016 from publishing house Paul Zsolnay Verlag Vienna. This series contains 260 letters arranged in chronological order addressed to 34 recipients spanning the period from 1878 to 1910. Here practically all aspects of Mahler’s private and professional life are touched upon: his friendships and his affairs, how he dealt with singers and with critics and his various relationships with colleagues, be they composers, conductors or concert agents. Earning particular interest is his correspondence with key poets and writers of the era such as Richard Dehmel, Gerhart Hauptmann or Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The annexed summary provides information on the specific letter recipients in each of these chapters including details about the number of published letters and the period of time they cover. A foreword, statements on the editorial approach, an index of Gustav Mahler’s works mentioned as well as an index of names supplement the letters proper.
