Biography

The musical development of Luis Codera Puzo (born 1981 in Barcelona) is characterized by a certain  dissatisfaction, which expresses itself through constant searching, and leads to continual revision of the fundamental principles of his work.
His musical education began autodidactically. Later he studied electric guitar, piano, trombone, and percussion, as well as big-band arranging and theory in a variety of genres such as jazz, modern, classical, and electronic music. Gradually he concentrated increasingly on composition, studied under Agustí Charles and Wolfgang Rihm, and enrolled in numerous masterclasses, among others with  Pierluigi Billone.
A significant part of his development as a musician is intense collaboration with the interpreters who perform his work, among them groups like Ensemble Modern, CrossingLines, Ensemble intercontemporain, camerata variabile Basel, UMS 'n JIP, Minguet Quartet and the Ensemble TEMA. His compositions were chosen for a reading session at impuls Akademie 2011, with Klangforum Wien under the direction of Enno Poppe. That same year he received a commission from Centre Acanthes for a work that was premiered by the Orchestre National de Lorraine in Metz. In June 2013 the Parisian Ensemble intercontemporain played the premiere of his work Aproximación a lo indivisible for ensemble and singer, based on texts about modern mathematics and philosophy and contemporary French poetry. The work emerged from a cooperation between Codera Puzo, IRCAM, and the Centre Pompidou for the ManiFeste-Festival.Codera Puzo obtaind stipends from the Consell Nacional de les Arts de Catalunya, the Catalan Ministry of Culture and Education, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Höpfner Foundation, the Christoph and Stephan Kaske Foundation and the French Ministry of Culture. In 2011 he won a specia prize at “Premio de Composición Injuve”. He additionally was awarded the “XIX Premio de Composición del Colegio de España y del I.N.A.E.M.” (Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música).
He is the co-founder and artistic director of CrossingLines (Barcelona), an ensemble in which he also plays improvised electronics and electric guitar. CrossingLines has distinguished itself in the city through intense advocacy for and publicization of contemporary music, through recordings and commissions for numerous composers.
In the last few years Luis Codera Puzo has concentrated much of his compositional and interpretive work on modular synthesis - and to a lesser degree also electric guitar - so as to achieve a more direct, physical, unmediated exploration of the musical possibilities of parameters, one which is almost diametrically opposed to what is familiar.
