Ensemble Recherche Residency at Northwestern University

Northwestern University, Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, Evanston, USA

With its formation more then two decades ago the Freiburg based Ensemble Recherche introduced a new type of instrumentation to the field of New Music Ensembles that re-invented “chamber music” from a contemporary perspective. Since then the group has had an enormous impact both on the sphere of composition as well as on performance practice. All over Europe and increasingly in the United States similar groups have been established often sharing the same repertoire. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supports the residency of Ensemble Recherche at Northwestern University that will bring this rich reservoir of experience, of knowledge, and of repertoire to the blossoming new music scene in Chicago. The Ensemble will engage both with composers and performers. The musicians will instruct young performers in contemporary instrumental techniques, work with them on contemporary repertoire, chamber music praxis, and ensemble rehearsal techniques. They will coach the New Music Ensemble of Northwestern University as well as individual instrumentalists. Furthermore, they will rehearse and perform several works by selected young composers. In addition to their tutoring activities, they will perform a concert of important works from their repertoire and give a presentation on their activities.
