Matrix-Akademie 2013

SWR-Experimentalstudio, Freiburg, Germany

Founded in 2009 by the Experimentalstudio of broadcaster SWR the matrix-Akademie is an international forum for composers, performers and musicologists interested in (live) electronic music. In concerts, lectures, workshops and master classes some 120 participants from 30 countries have so far had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the work of the Experimentalstudio and acquire a reflected approach to the genre of electronic music, in particular live electronic music. Working regularly in the Experimentalstudio, composers like Mark Andre, Chaya Czernowin, Georg Friedrich Haas and Brice Pauset have been invited to teach as lecturers at the academy.
Live electronics have developed into one of the most important fields of research and activity in New Music, which explains the need to improve the climate for performance options for this kind of music, especially for not yet established composers. By involving renowned performers such as Roberto Fabbriciani, Martin Fahlenbock, Reinhold Friedrich, Markus Hinterhäuser, Michael Kasper, Ernesto Molinari, Carolin and Jörg Widmann, or Ensemble Experimental – an ensemble founded as part of matrix bringing some of these experienced musicians together with young, highly gifted performers as a specialist ensemble for live electronic music – matrix also makes possible the responsible performance of new (commissioned) works.
This valuable and unique initiative of the SWR Experimentalstudio with its matrix-Akademie – which not only highlights the potential of live electronic music for young composers, musicians and musicologists from throughout the world but also promotes an aesthetic debate on this genre – is being supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation for the first time in 2013.
