Composition commission issued to David Philip Hefti

Schlossmediale Werdenberg, Switzerland

Schlossmediale Werdenberg is an international festival for Old Music, New Music and audiovisual art under the artistic direction of Mirella Weingarten. It is held annually at Schloss Werdenberg for ten days over Pentecost on the three-nation border between Liechtenstein, Austria and Switzerland. Every year a commissioned work is issued to a composer and also a fine artist. In 2012 the composer José María Sánchez-Verdú and the British land artist Chris Drury graced Schlossmediale with their works especially composed and designed for the festival. The motto for Schlossmediale 2013 will be "Auge um Auge" (Eye for an Eye). With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation the composer David Philip Hefti will write a work for Schlossmediale to be performed by the Neue Vocalsolisten who will once again open the festival with a focus on New Music in celebration of the Whitsun weekend. The debut performance will form the highpoint of a wandering concert that will lead the audience around the castle – featuring instruments like the shawm, bass clarinet, accordion and percussion as well as, of course, the Neue Vocalsolisten.
David Philip Hefti will compose "sound traces" for a variety of constellations that will lead the audience remotely. In thematic terms the concert will move from the musical debate, disparate sound modules and rhythms through to a pure, vocal sound: from eye for an eye to eye to eye.
