Composition commission issued to José Maria Sánchez-Verdú

Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen: Atlas. Inseln der Utopie, Germany

While not cartography in the literal sense of the word, ATLAS describes an associative collection of pictures, photos, reproductions or texts on a topic in the form of reference work or in loose sequence. The composition "Atlas. Inseln der Utopie" (ATLAS. Islands of Utopia) by José Maria Sánchez-Verdú is a combination of both – an archipelago of sound islands on a map with corresponding locations – in musical, spatial and textual terms. It is based on the idea of utopia as a "non-place". Developed for a specific location – the spacious gallery in the Hannover’s Herrenhäuser Gardens – particular spaces consisting of sound and light arise in amongst which observers can walk freely. In interaction with the "Auraphon" developed by the composer, musicians and singers create ever new perspectives. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting this Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen commission to José Maria Sánchez-Verdú.
