Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, Schwerin, Germany

With its roughly 120 concerts at over 80 venues the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival is the third largest, comprehensive music festival in Germany. With names like Kent Nagano, Nigel Kennedy and Hélène Grimaud, orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra, festival prize winners like Viviane Hagner, Daniel Hope, Daniel Müller-Schott and Julia Fischer as well as, more specifically, numerous up-and-coming young musicians and the young elite in international chamber music, year on year the festival attracts over 65,000 classical music fans to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the next season of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival the clarinetist Matthias Schorn will be prizewinner in residence. In 2005 he received the soloist’s prize at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. Matthias Schorn began his professional career as a clarinetist at the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and after positions at the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Munich Philharmonic he moved on to become solo clarinetist at the Vienna Philharmonic in 2007. As a soloist he also performed in concert with numerous acclaimed orchestras like the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, Vienna’s Jeunesse Orchestra, the Dresden State Orchestra, the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg, the Berlin Philharmonic and many more. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation a great “Clarinet Concert” is to be composed by Johannes Motschmann for the NDR Radio Philharmonic featuring Matthias Schorn under the baton of Matthias Ilkenhans to form part of the 2014/15 festival season.
