Eight composition commissions

Internationale Gesellschaft für Neue Musik, Sektion Österreich, Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s 2013 Weltmusiktage festival will include a musical theater project featuring eight commissioned works (Bernhard Lang, Jorge Sanchez-Chiong, Mirela Ivicevic, Jaime Wolfson, Tamara Friebel, Jörg Ulrich Krah, Fernando Riederer, and Oliver Weber). Performance will come care of two Viennese music theater ensembles – Sirene Operntheater and progetto semiserio. On one evening eight short pieces of musical drama by eight librettists and eight composers will be presented. The individual pieces will be grouped together into two blocks, each featuring four short operas although each block will interpret the theme in a different way. The specific theme of sirene Operntheater’s block is entitled "Gäste" (Guests). The brief to the librettist is to allow something new, unexpected, tragic, sensual or alarming through the opening of a door. The specific theme of the block to be performed by progetto semiserio is entitled "Parallelgesellschaften" (Parallel Societies). This should not only be understood in an "ethnic" sense. Any public space can become a (conflictual) gate between cultures – be it a restaurant, a mode of transport or a park. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting these eight composition commissions.
