Giacinto Scelsi Revisited 2014

Klangforum Wien, Vienna, Austria

Commissioned by Klangforum Wien Uli Fussenegger spent over a year remastering the digitalized tapes of the sound recordings left behind by Giacinto Scelsi – making findings that will revolutionize existing ideas on Scelsi’s compositional technique and modus operandi. In collaboration with Fondazione Scelsi, Klangforum Wien invited eight composers to create new ensemble works on the basis of the most substantial electronic notations of Scelsi’s compositional sketches. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the composition commissions issued to Georg Friedrich Haas, Tristan Murail, Hans Zender and Fabien Lévy – to be performed for the first time in May 2013 at the Acht Brücken Festival in Cologne and then in 2014 at the new chamber music festival Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik and also as part of the Biennale di Venezia.
Giacinto Scelsi’s composition has many very different facets and aspects that can serve as a crystallization point for considerations on the composition, the use of electronics, the performance practice and the fundamental meaning of music today. These considerations will be explored in all the concerts of the project – in two consecutive concerts and in one, dramatically staged long concert night (discussion, film, Scelsi’s original recordings, demonstrations on the Ondiola etc.). With a team of the most renowned figures in Scelsi research the Giacinto Scelsi Revisited Backstage project headed by Basel’s Music Academy will elaborate the academic foundations of the Klangforum’s project and cooperate closely with the ensemble itself.
