Festival of Contemporary Music – Tanglewood Music Center

Boston Symphony Orchestra, USA

With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Tanglewood Music Center’s Festival of Contemporary Music (FCM) presents a series of concerts performed by TMC fellows, TMC faculty, the New Fromm Players (a resident new music ensemble comprising TMC alumni), and prominent guest artists. In 2013, the FCM will be directed by pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. It will include a prelude concert, three chamber music concerts, a chamber orchestra concert, and a concert presentation of a major new opera. The FCM will present the work of a small number of composers (eight in total), including one world premiere, four national premieres, and one United States east coast premiere. The Boston Symphony Orchestra will also complement the festival with a performance of Carter’s Sound Fields.
Pierre-Laurent Aimard sees the 2013 FCM as an opportunity to concentrate on the music of a very few composers, with a specific focus on Helmut Lachenmann and Marco Stroppa. The representation for each composer will include three major works. For Lachenmann, works will include …zwei Gefühle… for narrator and large ensemble, and Got Lost, for soprano and piano. The young American JACK Quartet will perform his String Quartet No. 3, Grido. For Stroppa, works will include U.S. premieres of Let Me Sing Into Your Ear and Traietorria as well as Ossia. A prelude concert featuring Elliot Carter’s String Quartet No. 1 will open the Festival on August 8, 2013 as a special tribute to the composer.
