Complete Critical Edition of Arnold Schönberg's Writings

Internationale Schönberg-Gesellschaft, Vienna, Austria

Alongside his compositions Arnold Schönberg’s writings are valuable documents of the musical, spiritual and cultural history of the first half of the 20th century. Yet they are also of great significance for research into the notion of exile and thus also for contemporary history. Furthermore, they evidence the manifold interest of this eminent art figure (whose legacy was designated part of the world’s cultural heritage by UNESCO) – also in terms of questions relating to aesthetics, politics and religion. His political writings, and in this context particularly his contributions to the planning of a Jewish state (which he started writing in the early 1920s), as well as his general writings on the critical situation facing the Jewry (from 1933-1945) are also of particular relevance, especially again today. However, of the entire body of these writings still only some are in printed form. This situation is to be remedied by the complete critical publication of all writings that is being supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
