Academy for New Music 2014

Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich, Germany

At German music academies the musical repertoire of the second half of the 20thcentury, in particular, is generally rather overlooked. While a number of New Music ensembles or even institutes have become established, there is still a lack of integration of the relevant repertoire in private tuition and small chamber music line-ups. This is precisely the shortfall the course system at the Academy for New Music is trying to counter. Prominent performers of the most important instruments are to study precisely this repertoire in open master classes. The range of classes will be complemented by workshop concerts, soloist concerts by lecturers and academy concerts where teaching staff will perform alongside selected course participants. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be supporting the “New Music” Summer Academy that in 2014 is already being held for the fourth time now. Like in previous years, it has been possible to enlist the renowned Arditti Quartet for the course subjects String Quartet and Solo Instruments (violin, viola, violoncello). This year the quartet is joined by Nicolas Hodges (piano), Rainer Römer (percussion) and Salome Kammer (song). Hans Zender and Isabel Mundry will teach the Composition class. The program will be completed by two workshops: Rhythmus in der Neuen Musik (Rhythm in New Music) with Wolfram Winkel as well as Werkanalyse (Work Analysis) with Siegfried Mauser and guests.
The academy is aimed primarily at students attending German and international music academies but also at freelance performers who wish to further their training or specialize in the field of New Music.
