Ensemble Modern Komponistenstudio

Ensemble Modern GbR, Frankfurt, Germany

Over the course of the projects held in previous years and decades the Ensemble Modern (EM) noticed that during their training gifted young composers often lack the opportunity to hear their own works appropriately interpreted during and right after their studies, thereby missing the chance to explore and suitably further develop the actually perceivable, tonal result of their work. For this reason, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the ensemble called the Komponistenstudio into existence already back in 2012. Every two years this studio gives young composers the opportunity, at decisive moments in their careers, to study, discuss and then record their own works with the Ensemble Modern. For the three-day workshop six composers are selected. Applicants (up to about 28 years of age) should be at the end of their studies and be resident in Germany. The composers are chosen by an independent, three-person jury with the director of the workshop as far as possible being a member of this body. The score submitted for the selection process forms the basis of the rehearsals at the Komponistenstudio. The EM now once again plans to invite an experienced conductor/composer to lead the workshop. Each work is studied in two one-hour rehearsal sessions and is then recorded; for this the EM is at the disposal of the selected composers in its full line-up.
