Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice 2014

Callithumpian Consort, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

In 2014 the focus of Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, is the music of Lee Hyla. Several of Hyla’s works will be presented by SICPP faculty, visiting artists, Fellows and the Callithumpian Consort highlighted by a new work composed especially for the Consort. Selected Fellows will be assigned to perform Hyla’s works and sent music in early May to ensure the highest level of preparation. The composer will work closely with both the Callithumpian Consort and SICPP Fellows in rehearsal, conducting master classes on his works with the enrolled participants.
The SICPP has invited a Resident Composer since 2002; this year we will include a retrospective of their works, including music by Chaya Czernowin, Jonathan Harvey, Tristan Murail, Jo Kondo, Christian Wolff and others.
In June 2014 the SICPP will present its eighteenth annual festival featuring Composer-in-Residence Lee Hyla, Professor of Composition at Northwestern University, and performances by international guest artists John Tilbury, Nino Jvania, artistic director Stephen Drury, the Callithumpian Consort, and Fellows of the Institute. Seven concerts, free and open to the public, are presented along with daily coaching sessions, classes, and colloquia for the 60 Performance and Composition Fellows. A concluding 8-hour marathon concert by the SICPP Performance Fellows features works of Prof. Hyla, the Composition Fellows, and other new music. Six Composition Fellows are selected through submissions; Performance Fellows are selected via recordings and letters of recommendation. Fellows in recent years have come from all over the Americas, Europe, and Asia. SICPP Performance Fellows are also invited to present noon concerts at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum all week. SICPP 2014 will host two internationally acclaimed guest artists: British pianist John Tilbury will give a solo recital and a master class in modern solo and chamber works; Georgian pianist and Stockhausen specialist Nino Jvania will present the US premiere of Stockhausen’s complete Natural Durations.
