Etudes – A Project Series at Klavier-Festival Ruhr on the Piano Works of György Ligeti

Stiftung Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Essen, Germany

Already for seven years now this series focusing on the appreciation of contemporary piano music has been a fixture at Klavier-Festival Ruhr. In 2014 it will provide an intense exploration of György Ligeti’s piano works. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation the project consists of a total of three modules as well as a performance evening where Ligeti’s work will be center stage. The first part of the project is a master class with Pierre-Laurent Aimard where particularly gifted, up-and-coming young pianists will be familiarized with Ligeti’s work. On three consecutive days this acclaimed performer of Ligeti’s works will rehearse selected piano studies with master students from home and abroad. The entire master class will be filmed and then posted online. The second project module is aimed at young pianists. In a workshop lasting several months 13-16 year olds will rehearse the piano collection Musica ricercata as well as selected piano studies. At the same time, the young pianists will also be given the opportunity to explore their own creativity. They will be asked to freely interpret Ligeti’s small piano pieces, ideas and composition techniques and to develop these themselves. In the third part of the project a multi-disciplinary form is to be developed for dancers and musicians. Here six-formers and students are to explore the creative modus operandi of Ligeti’s music. All three parts of the project will be performed at the “Ligeti Night” forming the highpoint of the project on June 6.
