Giacinto Scelsi Revisited 2014

Klangforum Wien, Austria

In a unique way Giacinto Scelsi’s work causes listeners to dwell on sound and music and its relationship with people. This prompted Klangforum Wien – in collaboration with the backstage project of Basel’s music academy Hochschule für Musik Basel – to pose itself tangible musicological questions as well as examine the current impact of Scelsi’s work on the compositional creativity of the early 21st century. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation supported a series of spoken word concerts in Graz, Oslo, Brixen and Vienna focalizing not only an exploration of Scelsi’s exceptional composition technique but also his philosophical and speculative interests forming a key basis for his musical work.
Finally, in an eight-hour symposium in Hellerau the Klangforum will examine the relationship between sound and polis and, based on considerations from Plato’s Nomoi, it will focus on the acoustic bases of human coexistence in an extraordinarily dense music program lasting just under four hours.
Numbering eight in total these concerts are also aimed at making it possible to restage those works already composed and premiered between 2012 and 2014 as part of the project.
