International Summer Courses for New Music

Since 2010 the Darmstadt Summer Courses have opened their concert programs each year with paradigmatic repertoire works mostly lasting a whole evening:
In 2014 this will be Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Carré for four orchestras and four choirs from 1959/60 whose repeat performance will be supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Due to the great demands placed the performers and its complex performance situation Carré is featured extremely rarely on international concert programs. 
Commenting on the genesis of the work Stockhausen said at the premiere: “The first sketches arose at the end of 1958 on a plane while I was on a six-week tour of America. This took me on long plane trips daily where I flew above the clouds experiencing the slowest periods of change and the farthest open spaces. […]
This piece does not tell a story. Each moment can exist in its own right. You have to make an effort if you want to take in this music; the large majority of changes occur very cautiously INSIDE the tones. I wish this music could give a little inner tranquility, breadth and concentration; awareness that we have a great deal of time if we take this time for ourselves – that it is better to come to oneself rather than to be beside oneself; because the things that happen need someone who can use them, someone has to catch them.”
