Portrait Concert Claude Vivier

Ensemble ö!, Basel, Switzerland

The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be supporting the 6thconcert in the 2013/14 season of Ensemble ö! entitled: "Jenseits der Menschen" Portrait Concert CLAUDE VIVIER. “For many people Claude Vivier is considered the greatest composer Canada has ever produced. At the age of 34 when Vivier fell victim to a shocking murder he left some 49 compositions of different genres behind, from opera and orchestral works to chamber music works. György Ligeti dubbed him the ‘most outstanding French composer of his generation’...Vivier spent the last months of his life in Paris. On March 12, 1983 he was found stabbed to death in his apartment.” A benefactress of Ensemble ö! was one of two friends to Claude Vivier who found him dead at his home after the crime. It was in collaboration with this patron that the program has been put together now making it possible to hear all these works of chamber music at once in Switzerland for the first time: Paramirabo (1978) for flute, violin, violoncello and piano; Pièce pour Flûte et Piano (1975); Cinq Chansons (1980) for solo percussion; Pièce pour Violon et Piano (1975); Pièce pour Violoncelle et Piano (1975), Pulau Dewata (1972) for flute, violin, violoncello, piano and percussion. Vivier’s portrait concert will complement the theme of the entire season "Es sind noch Lieder zu singen" (There are still songs to be sung), a quote by Paul Celans Fadensonnen. The portrait concert is not merely intended as a performance of works, it also attempts, via a specially chosen selection, to trace the life of a person and composer, shed new light upon him and make audible his artistic needs.
