Weinberg String Quartet Weekend

Gesellschaft der Musik- und Kunstfreunde Heidelberg e. V, Germany

The composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg was for a long time largely unknown. To a certain degree, a book by David Fanning (2010) triggered his "unearthing". Since then Weinberg’s significance in the musical world has been uncontested. His opera Der Idiot was premiered in Mannheim in May 2013 and his opera Die Passagierin in Karlsruhe. Devoted as it is to the promotion of chamber music Heidelberg’s art and music society Gesellschaft der Musik- und Kunstfreunde Heidelberg e.V has ensured that these opera performances are now to be supplemented by a quartet weekend in July 2014. For this it has been possible to enlist Quatuor Danel, an acclaimed ensemble that has, amongst other things, already played at events such as the "Heidelberger Frühling" festival. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation all 17 of Weinberg’s quartets are to be performed over a period of three days and in a total of five concerts. The concerts will be accompanied by a lecture and workshop.

July 4–6, 2014
Auditorium of the Old University, Prividenzkirche and Musicology Department, Heidelberg
