Composer Portrait Galina Ustwolskaja

Wiener Festwochen, Austria

The festival Wiener Festwochen 2014 will be dedicating a concert series to the Russian composer Galina Ustwolskaja. Over one weekend her entire body of work will be performed and juxtaposed with Stravinsky’s late works. In its concentration and extreme dynamism Galina Ustwolskaja’s music defies attribution to any specific style or school and despite making a considerable contribution to contemporary music in the 21st century with its own aesthetics and individual expression it is still rarely performed. Galina Ustwolskaja had a very special relationship with the creative process. She saw her music as “spiritual”. The accompanying symposium held in collaboration with the University of Music and Performing Arts will use this opportunity to reflect on “Music and Spirituality”. A film program, including the film “Schrei ins All” made one year before her death, rounds off this composer portrait supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
