KLANG – Copenhagen Avantgarde Music Festival 2014

Kopenhagen, Denmark

Thanks to the various concerts and events of KLANG festival from May 30th to June 5th Copenhagen’s theater Republique will be filled with new sounds. KLANG is the continuation of the successful Athelas New Music Festival that has seen continuous growth since its inception in 2009, indeed doubling its audience number in 2013. It is a festival that not only appeals to the typical guest, but offers something to a variety of culturally interested people that are curious about the cultural tendencies of our time, be it in the visual or performing arts, literature or the latest documentary – KLANG is the place to go for musical inspiration. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation the program consists of cutting-edge works that are performed by established ensembles as well as younger ones which have recently received great recognition or are on their way to. What all the works and performers have in common is their will to explore new methods, their originality and their high professional standards. KLANG will present a large number of commissions plus world and Danish premieres – making our festival an important contribution to the Danish music scene both nationally and internationally. Specifically, the program in 2014 includes names like America’s renowned string players, the Mivos Quartet, that will present new American and Danish pieces, Denmark’s leading classical trio, Trio con Brio, performing works by the most important and internationally established Danish composers of the older generation, Dissonart from Greece playing a selection of younger European composers as well as a concert with The Danish National Chamber Orchestra amongst others presenting a world premiere by Bent Sørensen. KLANG is the platform of the avant-garde of today, but it is very aware that today’s art is built on the former avant-garde and to a high degree refers to it. This is why in 2014 we choose to underline this relationship with a concert series presenting one solo work every day from one of the great composers of the 20th century.
