The Look of the Sound – Musik ins Bild gesetzt

Tritonus Verein für zeitgenössische Musik, Bremen, Germany

Behind The Look of the Sound – Musik ins Bild gesetzt (Music in the Picture), a symposium already sponsored by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2012 and 2013, is the belief that the music film is a genre aimed at deepening the musical experience for music connoisseurs, on the one hand, and at opening up a new world of experience for interested amateurs, on the other. Doing justice to this claim requires experienced and musically versed directors. Not least to ensure such people are found the Junges Forum with its workshop and short film competition developed into a body focused on interdisciplinary encounters between composers, filmmakers and musicologists. In each case ten up-and-coming filmmakers can apply for free participation in the Junges Forum, they can choose mentors for themselves during the event and present their work on the last day in a workshop. The symposium permits the presentation of extensive illustrative material. The participation of musicians and composers as well as a live concert (with Ensemble Alternance playing works by Manoury, Maresz, André, Nillni and Maintz) make it possible to directly perceive music as an object of the films. From the current music film production in 2013/14 some 15 films will be chosen. For the 2014 Symposium five focal points are planned under the topics of Composition – Film Composition – Composer Films: alongside experience with the internet, archive films and the Junges Forum, Philippe Manoury, Jan Maresz and Mark Andre will talk about the links between film and music and also about their own music. Olga Neuwirth has also been invited to continue her presentation of music films.
