Ancora un segreto – Hommage-Sonate per Alfred Brendel Composition Commission issued to Maurizio Sotelo

International Piano Competition Foundation Ferruccio Busoni, Bolzano, Italy

In 1900 Ferruccio Busoni wrote: “Truly, Bach is the alpha of the piano score and Liszt is the omega”. The pianist Alfred Brendel has for many years now promoted the creativity and thought of the pianist, composer and progressive musical-aesthetic thinker Ferruccio Busoni. In 2011 and 2012 Alfred Brendel met Spanish composer Mauricio Sotelo several times at Berlin’s Wissenschaftskolleg. More specifically, they held intense discussions, and for Sotelo very inspiring ones, on Franz Liszt’s sonata in B-minor. This constellation prompted the wish to send out a special signal as part of the 60th anniversary edition of the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition – one that both honors the composer’s beliefs and also demonstrates to young pianists and the international audience the significance of New Music in the interpretation of historic masterpieces. With the financial support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Mauricio Sotelo will write a work for the Busoni Piano Competition intended as an homage to both Liszt and Brendel. Alongside the debut performance of “Ancora un segreto – Hommage-Sonate per Alfred Brendel” Liszt’s Sonata in B-Minor will also be performed.
