Berlin in the 20s – Composition Commission issued to Christian Jost

Konzerthaus Berlin, Germany

“What does Berlin sound like?” – This question lies at the core of a somewhat different country focus in the 2014/2015 season at Konzerthaus Berlin. The title “Berlin in the 20s” consciously avoids specifying the century, thereby aiming to intuitively create the (still open) link between the “Roaring 1920s” through to the now ever-approaching 2020s. While one end of this time period can be fully pinned down in musical terms (and indeed this is to form the content focus of the festival), we still do not know how Berlin will sound in the 2020s. Berlin composer Christian Jost attempts to approach the present-day sound of Berlin with a “Berlin Symphony” supported by Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, aiming to capture and archive the city’s joie de vivre in musical terms. The premiere will be presented on March 20, 2015 by the Konzerthaus Orchestra under the baton of its chief conductor Iván Fischer in the Großer Saal of the Berlin Konzerthaus. We look forward to hearing what this new city symphony or “Sinfonie der Großstadt” will sound like!
