Composition Commission for String Quartet issued to Jan Esra Kuhl

Oslo Quartet Series, Norway

Many capitals of the world have their own concert series for string quartet and indeed since 2012 the Oslo Quartet Series has focused on the string quartet in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. This concerts series is funded and organized by the three internationally acclaimed string quartet ensembles based in Oslo – the Vertavo Quartet, the Oslo String Quartet and the Engegård Quartet. The concerts in the series present both canon works in the string quartet repertoire as well as lesser known classic and romantic works in addition to music of our day.
The concert evenings each kick off with an introduction to the concert program allowing connoisseurs to discover something new and providing newcomers to the field of string quartets with an insight into the concert evening ahead.
For the 2014/2015 season the young German Armida Quartet has been invited to open the concert season and asked to collaborate with a composer and premiere a new piece of work for string quartet in Oslo. The Armida Quartet opted to collaborate here with Jan Esra Kuhl. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation will be supporting the commission issued to Kuhl. At the concerts in Norway the young composer will also provide an insight into the genesis and construction of his new work as part of the introduction mentioned above.
