Composition Commission to David Sawer

Royal Philharmonic Society, London, GB At the heart of this project is a collaboration of contemporary music and modern ballet, combining two expressive art forms to create a distinctive work able to be performed in an orchestral or dance setting. Fostering a greater understanding of each other’s techniques develops creative ability and shows different ways of approaching the creation of original work. The composer was selected by a commissioning panel which included Valerie Bourne (choreographer), Christopher Cook (broadcaster and journalist), Nigel Hinds (former Chief Executive, The Place), Bob Lockyer (former Head of Dance, BBC) and Gillian Moore (Head of Classical Music at the Southbank Centre). David Sawer is a 53-year old British composer of opera, choral, orchestral and chamber music, published by Universal Edition. A former pupil of Mauricio Kagel, he is Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His music is melodic, harmonic and dramatic, possessing a theatricality and exquisite sense of timing that is rooted in his love of drama and story-telling.
