Composition Commission issued to Samir Odeh-Tamimi: alif::split of the wall

RADIALSYSTEM V GmbH Berlin, Germany

The point of departure for the project is an age-old Sufi parable about a pupil writing the “Alif”, the first letter of the alphabet, over and over again. This is a parable about the onset of the sudden and unusual in the usual and repeated.

At the performance the audience can choose between an anteroom and the performance room from which particular elements are transmitted to the outside: music, visual details of the installation, the pumping of liquids, a pulse controlled by the pace of the music. If the audience wants to enter the performance room they have to pass through a system of darkened corridors. Here there is no stage. The setting is created by Folkert Uhde at each location. This setting arises from the playing positions of the Zafraan Ensemble and the singer Salome Kammer within the space that are linked by a complex guidance system care of installation artist Chiharu Shiota. This gives rise to a kind of organism that the audience can also become part of.

The performance is based on a freely arrangeable concept by Jeremias Schwarzer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Stefan Goldmann that condenses again into concrete, fully composed pieces by Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Stefan Goldmann. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the composition commission issued to Samir Odeh-Tamimi.
