Composition Commissions issued to Carola Bauckholt and Dmitri Kourliandski

Eunoia Quintett, Basel, Schitzerland

Wasser … Condensing is the title of the new project of the Eunoia Quintet. There are in fact two titles: Wasser is the heading for Carola Bauckholt’s piece while Condensing that of Dmitri Kourliandski. The quintet is issuing a composition commission to each of them with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. For Bauckholt’s piece water is to be exchanged between two polyethylene pools with the help of a system of pumps and tubes. The sounds produced in this way are used as musical material and are combined with their counterparts and supplements on traditional instruments, sound objects and audio tapes. Dmitri Kourliandski has for a long time toyed with the idea of developing a piece entirely from one object. He is now investigating condensed water running down a glass bottle. Five large glass containers are “respirated” and played by musicians and filmed by a camera. The live projections of the “animated” surface of the glass partially serve as a score for the performers: according to particular rules musical actions, motion sequences and changes are triggered. The visual and audible are thus already linked at the moment of their genesis and the individual elements depend directly upon one another.
