Cycle Music and Arts Festival in Kopavogur 2015

Cycle music and arts festival, Reykjavik, Iceland

During the Cycle Music and Arts Festival the town of Kopavogur in the south-west of Iceland is transformed into one great big and varied festival space. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation the festival is divided into four sections: 1 Concerts. These are the result of a cooperation with “Creative Europe” whereby talented young composers work on pieces with contemporary music ensembles in Iceland, Norway and Great Britain. These are now to be performed in the relaxed surroundings of a gym that fell victim to the 2007 financial crisis. Together with architecture students, artists and ensembles this forgotten space is to be injected with a new lease of life. 2 Installations. For these not only public spaces are planned but also a former mental hospital. The installations in the public space are a rare opportunity to confront people with art in their everyday lives. 3 Workshops. These constitute a relatively new form of art education in Iceland and are modelled on the Darmstadt Summer Courses. Planned here are workshops on composition, tonal design and on the relationship between music and text. 4 A symposium with all festival participants and members of Iceland’s cultural institutions.
