Listening Lab - Materials for Music Appreciation

Universal Edition, Vienna, Austria

Over the past few years the practical field of musical appreciation/education has seen dynamic growth – numerous orchestras and ensembles as well as concert houses are seeking ways to win over a wider audience for their performances. Specific concert formats are developed especially for schoolchildren and preparatory workshops are held to make the live experience in the concert hall as intense and rich in references as possible. There are still not very many materials available to assist this practice of music appreciation. Here Vienna publishing house Universal Edition series fills a gap pointing the way for an accessible, stimulating, practice-related approach for children, young people and adults. In each instance it places a work from the modern or present day center stage. In addition to concrete ideas for the implementation of workshops for varying age groups and dramaturgical materials on the context of the works, multimedia supplements flank each volume. As pilot volumes 2014 saw the publication of Alban Berg – Violinkonzert and György Ligeti – Atmospheres. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the publication of the volumes on works by Pierre Boulez, Béla Bartók and Arnold Schönberg.
