Peter Gülke: Musik – Abschied – Tod (Music – Parting – Death)

Bärenreiter-Verlag, Kassel, Germany

Peter Gülke uses the open form of writing short, inter-connected essays and reflections to focus on the themes of death, parting and dying – primarily in music but also in literature and in our present day life. The aim of the book is to trace through the centuries how we deal with the topic of death and parting in music – and incidentally also in literature. Here individual types of artistic “work” are illustrated by means of these existential questions but, furthermore, links are drawn between composers from different centuries. With inimitable eloquence Gülke presents findings of general interest which are indeed significant for the cultural discourse on death and transience. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is supporting the publication of the work that will be appearing in March 2015 from publishing house Bärenreiter Verlag in Kassel.
