Composition Commission issued to Roland Moser

Basel Chamber Orchestra

Founded in the early 20th century by conductor and patron Paul Sacher, Basel Chamber Orchestra perpetuates Basel’s chamber music tradition by regularly issuing composition commissions. Local Basel and Swiss composers, in particular, are highly valued choices for commissions. For instance, with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation a composition commission for the 2009/2010 season was issued to Roland Moser, one of the best known Swiss composers of our day. The piece he produced here "Sein und Meinen" (Existence and Opinion) makes references to the famous 2,500 year old poem by pre-Socratic philosopher Parmenides about the two paths to realization: absolute existence and relativizing experience.
