Composition Commissions issued to Hans Werner Henze and Heinz Holliger for the Leipziger Thomanerchor

Bach-Archiv Leipzig

In 2012 Leipzig’s Thomanerchor will be 800 years old making it one of the oldest boys’ choirs of such longstanding tradition. To mark this anniversary the City of Leipzig is commissioning five renowned composers to write five festival pieces for boys’ choir. The works will be performed for the first time in 2012 at St Thomas’ Church Leipzig as part of the liturgies for Epiphany, Easter, Pentecost, Reformation and Christmas. The composers are free to use texts of their choice. They should, however, make the liturgical context clear. The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation is funding the composition commissions issued to Hans Werner Henze and Heinz Holliger.
