Five Composition Commissions for a Music Dance Theater Piece

Flügelschlag Variationen

Marking the bicentenary of Robert Schumann’s birth a music dance theater piece will be performed for the first time focusing on the life and work of the Romantic composer from a variety of perspectives. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation five contemporary composers from the USA, Russia and Germany – Peter Gilbert, Sergej Nevski, Karola Obermüller, Annette Schlünz and Georg Katzer – will each compose an act of the full piece "Robert S." that will be performed for the first time in five Schumann cities in the Schumann bicentenary year 2010. The anniversary celebrations are of great interest worldwide: featuring spectacular performances of his music as well as a lively and creative look at the world-famous composer and his role in cultural affairs: as creator of the first European network featuring contemporary musical performances in all music capitals of the day and as founder of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (New Journal of Music) he promoted international exchange and pioneered European ideals.

October 29th 2011, Premiere
Zwickau
