Varèse 360 degrees

National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, London

Amongst the outstanding productions featured in the program at last year’s Holland Festival in June 2009 was Varèse 360 degrees. Staged on two concert evenings this production linked the complete works of Franco-American composer Edgard Varèse (1883–1965) with works of the video artist Gary Hill. With the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Varèse 360 degrees was also performed by the Asko|Schoenberg Ensemble and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Peter Eötvös at the Paris Festival d’Automne in October 2009. The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain is now taking part in a further date in the project: after a two-week rehearsal phase at the University of Durham the young musicians are now to perform Varèse’s major orchestral works Turning UpNocturnalArcana and Amériques at the Southbank Centre under Paul Daniel.
