Heidelberger Atelier

As part of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation’s promotion of the Heidelberger Atelier, the Heidelberger Frühling festival in spring is dedicated to New Music. Alongside the promotion of young composers through composition commissions, workshops, composer seminars and discussions the focus here lies on music appreciation with open rehearsals, lecture recitals and concert introductions. The close collaboration with Matthias Pintscher as artistic director is to be continued in 2010. Together with the festival he has developed a program that juxtaposes music from the 20th and 21st centuries with works from the Classical and Romantic eras. Alongside works by Matthias Pintscher and Magnus Lindberg pieces by the likes of Schumann, Mendelssohn and Ravel will also be performed; Stravinsky’s "Histoire du solda"t featuring the actor Dominique Horwitz as a narrator also feature in the program. This year’s composer portrait is dedicated to the Finish composer Magnus Lindberg, one of the highest profile composers of our day. The Financial Times recently praised him as follows: "[Lindberg is]... a proven master in his own cogent idiom... We need him; he is a true and original tonic." As in previous years, in 2010 six up-and-coming composers will also be invited to present their work. This year the festival will for the first time be awarding an audience prize to one of them.
