BWEAF 2011 – Concertare

BW Ensemble-Akademie Freiburg .e.V.

Since its founding in 2004 the range on offer at the Ensemble-Akademie Freiburg has been constantly extended. In 2011 the cooperation between the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and ensemble recherche, supported once again by the EvS Music Foundation, will offer two new additions: the discovery of new sounds by combining historic and modern instruments will be centerstage at this year’s academy. However, there is very little in the way of musical literature for a symbiosis of this kind. For this reason, the composition competition Concertare – der Wettbewerb was initiated. Here the jury (Rebecca Saunders, Jörg Widmann, Andreas Staier, Markus Hinterhäuser, Martin Fahlenbock and Karl Kaiser) received over 60 applications from young composers from whom they selected Mark Barden, Aaron Einbond and David Hudry to receive composition commissions. All three pieces will be performed for the first time at BWEAF 2011. Also new here is a six-day orchestral course offered by the musicians of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. On the program will be a late suite by Jean-Philippe Rameau with clarinets, a London symphony by Joseph Haydn and one of the two violin romances by Ludwig van Beethoven where one academy participant will be given the opportunity to perform as a soloist.
