Composition Commission for the Beijing International Music Competition

Despite the country gradual opening up it is still hard for China to establish itself and play a global role on the international New Music scene – only rarely has it been possible for musicians or even music students to gather experience abroad. Therefore, the International Music Competition Beijing, to be held already for the fifth time in 2012, is an attempt to bring international performers and music of the highest standard into this country. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation Birte Bertelsmeier will be commissioned for a piece lasting some 10 minutes for the flute competition discipline. Unlike most similar events in China the Beijing International Music Competition is not organized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture but is a private initiative. Here organizers pursue independent and fair guidelines with the aim of not merely improving musical education in China but also promoting intercultural exchange and mutual understanding between cultures.
