Chamber Opera "Didos Geheimnis"

Mädchenchor Hannover e.V.

Founded in 1952 the girls’ choir Mädchenchor Hannover is one of the best renowned youth choirs in Germany. Winning numerous prizes at competitions (Deutscher Chorwettbewerb, Arezzo, Varna, BBC London, Tolosa, Marktoberdorf, Brahms-Wettbewerb Hamburg, “Let the peoples sing” etc.) it enjoys an excellent international reputation. Concert performances take the girls’ choir all over Europe and to Asia, South America, the USA, Canada and Israel. At the choir and singing school of Mädchenchor Hannover qualified, performance-oriented and experienced teaching staff ensure the choir and the individual singing voices undergo continuous training. The Mädchenchor Hannover performs works from all eras for equal voices while laying its focus on the preparation of contemporary works for choir. Thanks to numerous composition commissions the Mädchenchor Hannover has been instrumental in extending the repertoire for youth and girls’ choirs. It has, for instance, premiered works by Steffen Schleiermacher, Manfred Trojahn, Wilfried Hiller, Arvo Pärt and Toshio Hosokawa. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation a composition commission has been issued to Andreas N. Tarkmann for a chamber opera in 2011. All parts for soloists are taken by former members of the girls’ choir who have now become professional singers at various German opera houses. Didos Geheimnis (Dido’s Secret) is a detective story in seven scenes set at a girls’ boarding school and is particularly aimed at appealing to young girls. The premiere will be held in September 2011 at the Galeriegebäude of the Herrenhäuser Gärten in Hanover. Further performances are planned in Oldenburg, Osnabrück and Schwarmstedt.
