Styria cantat IV

Steirischer Sängerbund, Graz, Austria

The Styrian choral association Steirischer Sängerbund is an umbrella organization of choirs, vocal ensembles and choir singers in Styria that has made it its task to promote choir singing in Styria and to preserve local singing traditions. Contemporary music has a special place in Austria and very especially in Styria. With the Styria Cantat project the Steirischer Sängerbund has dedicated itself in a very special way to the promotion and interpretation of contemporary choir music since 2007. Due to the scarcity of contemporary choir works for lay and youth choirs 20 Austrian composers were invited with the support of the EvS Music Foundation to explore texts by Austrian authors and lyricists and to create works compatible for the youth age group for Styria Cantat IV. The very successful, close collaboration between composers and choirmasters also in past project phases produced viable and challenging choir music that was presented by popular choirs. The premieres were held in Graz on February 17th 2011.
