Composition Commission to Christoph Garbe

Internationale Orgelwoche Nürnberg – Musica Sacra

May 28th 2011 sees Nuremberg host two major cultural events: Nuremberg’s Blaue Nacht and the international organ festival Internationale Orgelwoche Nürnberg (ION). Blaue Nacht (Blue Night), whose motto for 2011 is Fremde Welten (Strange Worlds), extends an invitation to experience art and culture at unusual locations and at unusual times of the day/night. These two events coinciding means ION 2011 will for the first time be able to contribute to this evening of the arts. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation ION’s Artistic Director Wilfried Hiller was able to grant a composition commission to the young composer Christoph Garbe. Over the course of the Blaue Nacht  Garbe’s work Das blaue Land – Der Fernen fernste, in memoriam Franz Marc(The Blue Country – Furthest from Afar, in Memory of Franz Marc) together with a debut performance of work by Berlin composer Martin Torp will be performed on several occasions at Nuremberg’s St. Lorenz church. St. Lorenz is home to the largest organ in a protestant church in Germany. 2011 also sees ION celebrate its 60thbirthday – probably making it the oldest festival for church and organ music.

With its two performances ION wishes to make a prominent contribution to new organ music and also tap into a new audience. The presence of ION in the Blaue Nacht offers many opportunities for just this.
