Composition Commissions issued to Amy Cunningham, Mikhail Karikis and Claudia Molitor

University of Brighton, Great Britain

The installations of German sound sculptor Peter Vogel blur the borders between fine art and music. They are both instruments and sculpture at the same time. As part of the project “Sounding out the Museum” the University of Brighton commissioned new works by Amy Cunningham, Mikhail Karikis and Claudia Molitor for Vogel’s interactive sound sculptures with the support of the EvS Music Foundation. These works were presented between November 2010 and January 2011 in an exhibition held in the university gallery. Prompted by Vogel’s works gallery visitors are to question the relationships between composition and improvisation, between listening and watching as well as between music and sculpture. The exhibition is supplemented by a DVD featuring documentary material. The most important works for which the new compositions were developed are Sound Wall and Schattenorchester. Cunningham, Karikis and Molitor’s compositions were performed on January 12th 2011.
