CULTURESCAPES Israel 2011 – Composition Commission issued to Chaya Czernowin

Cultureescapes, Bern

The CULTURESCAPES festival series has taken us from Georgia via Turkey through to China. Last year the festival invited Wang Xilin, a composer marked by the vagaries of Chinese politics/cultural policy, to come to Switzerland where his piano concerto commissioned by CULTURESCAPES was premiered. In 2011 Israeli composer Chaya Czernowin, the Ernst von Siemens Composers’ Prize winner in 2003, will be centerstage. Born in Haifa Czernowin was commissioned with a work for debut performance with the support of the EvS Music Foundation. The commissioned work will be integrated into the overall program of CULTURESCAPES whose aim it is to convey the work of the Israeli composer to a wider audience. Concerts featuring Czernowin’s works will be introduced with a discussion with the composer herself. The aim of the festival is also to shed a different light on countries particularly in the limelight due to their political tensions and to generate awareness amongst observers about other aspects.
