“Rhythmik 100 Hellerau” – Composition Commissions issued to Dieter Schnebel and Manos Tsangaris

In 1911 Swiss national Emile Jaques-Dalcroze founded Hellerau Festival Hall. The idea behind this was to create a home for rhythmic music and to provide a space to promote the idea of pan-European encounters. On the building’s 100th anniversary it was possible with the support of the EvS Music Foundation to issue composition commissions to Dieter Schnebel and Manos Tsangaris. In their works aspects of multidisciplinarity, the use of elements of musical theater or the inclusion of the human body as a means of musical expression are all to play a role here. The project is to be the result of creative collaboration between rhythmists, composers and performing musicians. Here each composer has a group of students on hand stewarded by an experienced rhythmist or choreographer. The concerts themselves will be accompanied by an intense supporting program of lectures and workshops. The Rhythmik 100 Hellerau project aims to help increase the importance of Hellerau as a focal point of international encounters and networking for rhythmics and its inclusion in multidisciplinary artistic projects and sets out to remind us that it is in fact rhythmics that gave birth to the structural ensemble of the festival hall.
