Construction: for 3 Voices, 16 Instruments and Electronic Music

ELISION Ensemble

Construction was written between 2005 and 2010 for Ensemble Elision. In his work composer Richard Barrett looked to an idea of Francis Bacon’s who in 1605 in The New Atlantis describes a kind of new music. The entire performance is to be held in a so-called “Sound House”, a sound installation. The debut performance supported by the EvS Music Foundation consists of two acts encircling the main theme of the composition: the relationship between real and unreal cities, i.e. “utopoi”. The concept of the composition intends to “distill” already established genres like opera, oratorium, concert, installation or improvisation and to thereby find a new musical form.
