“Brahms and the Modern Age” – Hamburg Ostertöne Festival 2011

The motto Brahms und die Moderne sums up the core focus of the festival founded in 2006 by Hamburg general music director Simone Young: opening up links between the music of the 19th century and that of the present day. Brahms not least became the father of integral composition due to Schönberg’s reception of his work. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation Ostertöne also attempts to forge further links here in 2011. As composer in residence this year José María Sánchez-Verdú moves center stage. At the forefront of a comprehensive showcase are two premieres by the Spaniard: one a madrigal commissioned by the Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and the other a commissioned composition for the Aleph Gitarrenquartett also supported by the EvS Music Foundation. A further highpoint is the new staging of Sanchéz-Verdú’s chamber opera Aura. Partner to the festival, the Instituto Cervantes provides a comprehensive range of supporting events.
