Publication of Frank Schneider’s Complete Writings on 20th Century Music

In the former German Democratic Republic from 1970 onwards musicologist Frank Schneider played a decisive role in the development of a specific historic avant-garde with his extensive research and publications – an avant-garde that on the one hand usurped “socialist realism” while at the same time reflecting international developments. Schneider was in close contact with numerous composers of his generation. The thus ensuing fruitful blend of theoretical discourse and practical ideas of implementation made it possible for a structure-determining counterweight to official doctrines. The collected writings to be published with the support of the EvS Music Foundation are aimed at promoting understanding of the aestheto-musical reality during the Cold War.
