Publication: Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960

Fifty years after the world premiere of Intolleranza 1960 held at Venice’s Teatro La Fenice in April of 1961 Luigi Nono's "scenic action" is finally to be re-staged in Italian at the theater which sought and hosted its debut. The opera will open the 2011 season marking the 150^th anniversary of Italian unification. To commemorate the occasion and the 20^th anniversary of the Venetian composer’s death the Luigi Nono Archives, in collaboration with the Emilio and Annabianca Vedova Foundation, will be presenting a multimedia documentary exhibition. A first, mythical, stormy opera in every phase of its realization and in its results, the original Venetian production of Intolleranza 1960 constitutes an essential phase in the biographies and artistic careers of Nono and Vedova. The materials to be exhibited will trace an original course between the phases of realization of the unrepeatable event: from the discovery of the Laterna Magika to the first ideas for the libretto and the scenic action developed with the Slavic scholar Angelo Maria Ripellino right through to the debut in Venice. The exhibition, divided into three sections (genesis, production, and reception of the opera) also includes a listening station featuring unreleased audio material (the recording of the world premiere from RAI archives in Rome) and a video (featuring historical interviews with multiple protagonists of the events and illustrious spectators at the premiere). Promoted by the Luigi Nono Archives Foundation and funded by the EvS Music Foundation it has been possible to publish a volume (Marsilio Editions, edited by A. I. Oe Benedictis; G. Mastinu, N. Schoenberg Nono) aimed at familiarizing readers with the facts and context related to the opera and providing them with a rich iconographic display illustrating the narrated events.
