Video Documentation Arditti String Quartet

Department of Music, Kingston University, UK

The creative team of Paul Archbold, Colin Still and David Lefeber at Kingston University London have created several audio-video research documentaries such as Electric Chair Music, Multiphonics and the Oboe and Fluxions. With the support of the EvS Music Foundation they this time documented the preparation of Brian Ferneyhough’s 6th string quartet by the Arditti String Quartet from the first rehearsal through to the première performance at the Donaueschinger Musiktage 2010. By recording the rehearsal process the documentary aims to capture the interpretative strategies employed by the musicians and to investigate the technical challenges presented by the work and document performing solutions. The complex temporal flow of Ferneyhough’s work presents a particular challenge to musicians, and the documentary probes the acceptable range of variation in ensemble precision.

The research documentary, also including interviews with the performers and the composer, is aimed at a specialist audience of composers, performers and scholars of contemporary music. It will be released on the academic website PRIMO (Practice as Research in Music Online, hosted by the Institute of Musical Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London) and submitted to iTunesU to encourage the dissemination of the musical insights worldwide.
